Coaching Staff

Shawn Trueblood  |  Assistant Coach

Finally, first-year head coach Justin Chezem announced the addition of Shawn Trueblood to his staff heading into the 2019 season. Trueblood has served as an assistant coach with the nationally-ranked CNU women's program for the last two years and will return to the men's team after working with the Captains for five years prior to that stint. While a player at Christopher Newport, he was a four-year starter on defense under head coach Steve Shaw between 2004-07, scoring five goals in his career. CNU averaged 12 wins a season while Trueblood roamed the pitch, earning one trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Since graduating with a degree in Communication Studies from CNU, Trueblood has gone on to build his coach his resume as a staff member at Lafayette HS and with the Virginia Legacy. He has served as a coach in the Legacy program since 2008, and oversaw the East End Legacy's Developmental, Advanced Development, and U10-U18 Travel Teams. He became the head coach for the James HS girls squad and was the head coach with the Virginia ODP Central District program. He was a part of the coaching staff at CNU this year as the Captains women's squad advanced to the program's first ever NCAA National Semifinals and finished with a program record 21-2 mark.

Ryan Hagerty is beginning his 17th season as a member of the staff in 2019.

During his time on the sidelines, Hagerty has been instrumental in Christopher Newport’s numerous postseason runs. Since joining the staff, he has helped guide the Captains to seven NCAA Tournament berths, including Elite Eight appearances in 2008, 2009 and 2014.

Before joining Shaw on the sidelines, Hagerty was a three-year standout for the Captains. As a player, he helped anchor a defense that allowed just 18 goals in 22 games and rolled to the Elite Eight in 2000.

A Virginia Beach native, he led Kempsville High School to a state championship and also garnered First Team All-State and All-Beach District honors during that time.

Hagerty and his wife Lindsay have a daughter, Kylee, and son, Mason are currently living in Seaford. He is a History teacher and coach at York High School in the York County Public School System.
