Coaching Staff


Justin Chezem  |  Assistant Coach

A staple on the sidelines of Christopher Newport men's soccer for the last nine years, Justin Chezem returns to CNU for his tenth season as an assistant coach in 2016.

Since joining the coaching staff, CNU has posted a 169-41-26 record, more than half of Coach Shaw's 280 career head coaching victories. With Chezem on the staff, the team has appeared in seven NCAA Tournaments, including three trips to the Elite Eight.

Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Chezem was a four-year player for head coach Steve Shaw from 2001-04. During that time, he helped the Captains post a combined 48-25-6 record. On an individual level, he was a first team All-Conference pick in 2003 and 2004. Additionally, he was named to the USA South All-Tournament team for his efforts in the postseason during the 2004 campaign.

Chezem graduated with a degree in Business Marketing and has also coached locally at Warwick High School. He and his wife Elizabeth currently reside in Newport News.

Ryan Hagerty  |  Assistant Coach

Ryan Hagerty is beginning his 14th season as a member of head coach Steve Shaw’s staff in 2016.

During his time on the sidelines, Hagerty has been instrumental in Christopher Newport’s numerous postseason runs. Since joining the staff, he has helped guide the Captains to seven NCAA Tournament berths, including Elite Eight appearances in 2008, 2009 and 2014.

Before joining Shaw on the sidelines, Hagerty was a three-year standout for the Captains. As a player, he helped anchor a defense that allowed just 18 goals in 22 games and rolled to the Elite Eight in 2000.

A Virginia Beach native, he led Kempsville High School to a state championship and also garnered First Team All-State and All-Beach District honors during that time.

Hagerty and his wife Lindsay have a daughter, Kylee, and son, Mason are currently living in Seaford. He is a History teacher and coach at York High School in the York County Public School System.
